Why You Should Consider Tankless for Your Next Water Heater

Having options is great. Whether it’s deciding what to order from your favorite restaurant, what movie to watch, or where to go on vacation – options make life much more fun and interesting.

But sometimes, making decisions can be difficult. Take your water heater, for example. Let’s say it’s time to replace it with a brand-spanking new model. Sounds simple enough, right? Until you realize that there’s more to choose from than the last time around.

We’re here to help make that choice a little easier and share why more and more homeowners are choosing tankless models for their hot water needs.

What is a Tankless Water Heater?

As the name suggests, a tankless water heater heats water without the need for a storage tank. Instead, it heats water as it moves through the heat exchanger, providing you with an endless supply of hot water whenever you need it.

Gas or Electric?

There are two types of tankless water heaters: gas and electric. While solid choices in their own right, they each have distinct pros and cons.

Some of the notable differences between the two are:

Cost: Electric models are generally cheaper upfront, however, natural gas and propane are usually more affordable utility options than electricity.

Installation: Gas models require ventilation, thus requiring more work to install. Your home’s venting and gas line will dictate where a gas tankless water heater can be installed. On the other hand, an electric unit can go just about anywhere, including underneath your kitchen sink.

Maintenance: Electric units require very little maintenance, only needing to be flushed once a year to remove lime scale build-up. Gas units should be maintained by a licensed professional to remain in tip-top shape and prolong their lifespan.

Usage: If you have a larger household or a routine that demands a lot of hot water at the same time, gas may be the better option. Electric models do not put out nearly as much hot water.

Which Option Is Right for You?

A water heater is not a “one size fits all” purchase. Before deciding on gas or electric, consider your budget, hot water needs, installation location, and personal preferences.
