Common Uses for Baking Soda

Baking Soda and vinegar with lemons

While we no longer live under the cloud of a pandemic, there were lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis that aren’t likely to disappear any time soon. Perhaps more than anything, we learned the value of personal sanitation both in terms of how to better protect ourselves and those with whom we come in contact.

Today, people wash their hands more often, cover up during a cough or sneeze, wash their produce before eating it, keep their kitchen and bathroom counters clean, and work hard to keep indoor air pollutants at bay.

While that clean bug still has his or her teeth still stuck on you, consider the many uses of baking soda, and how it can contribute to cleaner and healthier living on its own.

  1. Add half a cup of baking soda to a bucket of warm water and use the mixture to wash tile floors.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda on a carpet and let it sit overnight, then vacuum thoroughly to banish odors.
  3. Freshen the air naturally by mixing 1/8 cup baking soda, 2 cups hot water, and the juice from one lemon in a clean spray bottle. Shake thoroughly and spay away!
  4. Add ½ cup baking soda to your laundry detergent to boost its cleaning power.
  5. Freshen up bath towels, bed linens, and workout clothes by adding ½ cup baking soda to the washing machine’s rinse cycle.
  6. Soak coffee pots and mugs in a mixture of ¼ cup baking soda and a quart of warm water to remove coffee and tea stains.
  7. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda onto the bottom of your oven and spray with clean water, let it sit overnight, then scrub away the stuck-on food remnants.
  8. Wash your produce naturally by mixing a tablespoon of baking soda and a cup of distilled vinegar into a large bowl of warm water. Wait for the fizzing to subside before adding the product. Scrub gently if needed and rinse with clean water.
  9. Sprinkle baking soda on a clean damp sponge or soft bristle brush and scrub bathroom tiles, showers, bathtubs, and sinks. Then rinse with clean water and wipe or air dry.

You know what makes cleaning with baking soda even more effective? Having fresh, clean water to mix it with. How’s your home water supply?
